RESEARCH INTERESTs
Professor Wayne Hawthorne’s research focuses on advancing xenotransplantation, organ perfusion and preservation, and clinical islet and pancreas transplantation. His career has focussed on continuous innovation in organ and cell transplantation, with major national and international impact across translational science, clinical practice, and global policy development.
His research programs integrate:
- Xenotransplantation: Developing safe and effective cross‑species organ and cell transplantation strategies, with a focus on immunomodulation, genetic modification of donor tissues, and global governance of clinical translation.
- Organ Perfusion & Preservation: Enhancing organ viability through novel machine‑perfusion technologies, therapeutic perfusion interventions, and diagnostics to improve transplant outcomes.
- Islet Transplantation: Advancing clinical protocols, refining isolation techniques, and driving innovations that support broader clinical access and improved long‑term graft function.
