BIO

I am a Senior Lecturer in the School of Physics at the University of Sydney, where I study learning and intelligence through the lens of physics. My research group blends ideas from statistical physics, information theory and machine learning to understand how intelligent behavior emerges in complex systems—from deep neural networks to biological organisms.

I received my PhD in Physics from the University of Cambridge, where I worked on ultracold quantum gases in the Theory of Condensed Matter Group within the Cavendish Laboratory. I have held postdoctoral positions at Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (Biological Physics Theory Unit), Northwestern University (Condensed Matter Theory group) and CUNY Graduate Center (Initiative for the Theoretical Sciences). During this time, I was also affiliated with Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and the Center for the Physics of Biological Function, a joint effort between Princeton University and CUNY Graduate Center. I am currently an Affiliate Member of the NSF-Simons National Institute for Theory and Mathematics in Biology (NITMB).
