BIO
Associate Professor Uwe Roehm is a world-recognized researcher on database management systems, transaction processing, and scalable data analytics. He is best known for developing serialisable snapshot isolation (SSI), together with Prof Alan Fekete and Michael Cahill, which has subsequently been implemented in the PostgreSQL database engine, and for which he won the ACM SIGMOD Test-of-Time Award in 2018. Previously, he also has worked on wireless-sensor networks, and on freshness-aware scheduling (FAS), an approach to combined OLTP/OLAP processing in large clusters that allows clients to trade data freshness for query performance. His current research interests are on human-centred data management, and on integrating machine learning with databases for big data analytics.
Associate Professor Roehm completed his PhD in Computer Science at ETH Zurich in 2002. He joined the University of Sydney in 2004 after briefly working as software developer in Munich, Germany. At the University of Sydney, he organises the Database Research Group at the School of Computer Science and is leader of the human-centred data management research node. In 2014, he started the Master of Data Science program at the University of Sydney, and was instrumental to the creation and introduction of a university-wide Major in Data Science, as well as the BAdvComp major in Computational Data Science. He has been a reviewer for leading database conferences and journals such as the ACM SIGMOD Conference on Management of Data, the International Conference on Very Large Databases (VLDB), the Conference on Innovative Data Systems Research (CIDR), the IEEE Big Data conference, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, and the Information Systems Journal. He has been a visiting researcher with Microsoft's SQL Server group. He is Chief Investigator on an ARC-funded Discovery Project and also on a Linkage Project funded by ARC and MongoDB.
