Dr Simone De Morgan is a primary health care researcher and teacher at the General Practice Clinical School, University of Sydney - Senior Lecturer (teaching and research) & Senior Research Fellow (pain management).
Stream 1 of Simone’s research relates to co-designing interdisciplinary models of care in primary care for adults, adolescents and young people with chronic pain. Stream 2 of Simone’s research relates to pain management education in healthcare professional curricula and as continuing professional development. Stream 3 of Simone’s research focuses on social prescribing and the integration of health and social care in primary care. Stream 4 of Simone’s research focuses on strategies implemented by education providers to increase interest in general practice.
Simone in collaboration with University of Sydney and Curtin University colleagues established the not-for-profit social enterprise, Online Pain Education Network (OPEN Ltd), providing interdisciplinary pain management education to healthcare professionals (www.openpaintraining.com). Simone was awarded a 2025 Vice-Chancellor's Award for Excellence (Highly Commended) in the 'Partnering with Impact' category. Through her leadership across a consortium of academic partners, philanthropy partners (TDM Foundation and Hearts and Minds Investments), professional healthcare associations, consumer organisations and government, she has positioned OPEN as a national program, delivering benefits to healthcare professionals, the University, and most importantly, Australians living with chronic pain. Simone is the Co-chair of the OPEN Education and Research Advisory Committee.
Simone co-leads the General Practice Clinical School research skills program for the academic GP registrars and General Practice Clinical School staff.
Simone is an Executive Member of the NSW Agency for Clinical Innovation (ACI) Pain Management Network (PMN), the Australasian Association for Academic Primary Care (AAAPC) Academic Policy and Advocacy subcommittee and the USYD Community and Primary Health Care Network (CPHCN) Leadership Group.
Simone is a member of the RACGP Foundation Awards Panel and a regular panel member for the MRFF grant assessment committee. Simone is involved in policy development and advocacy at federal and state levels related to primary health care and chronic pain.
