Professor Shailendra Sawleshwarkar is Professor of Global Health and Education and the Director Postgraduate Coursework at the Sydney Medical School, Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Sydney. He is a national and international leader in health professional education and global health. As a physician, he works at the intersection of clinical and public health practice which has helped provide unique perspectives and understanding across systems to shape the future health workforce. Shailendra has prioritised research that addresses key global health challenges and championed the role of catalyst and facilitator to develop academic networks in health professional education, One Health, infectious diseases and sexual reproductive health. He works as physician at the Western Sydney Sexual Health Centre, which provides high quality clinical services in Sexual Health and HIV and is an internationally renowned research and teaching centre.

After completing his MD in India followed by further training in HIV & STIs research in London, Shailendra moved to Australia in 2006. He has extensive experience in clinical practice, education and research in diverse settings. Given the importance of HIV and other STIs to public health in Australia and worldwide, he is passionate about developing educational and research partnerships for global health.

Supported by grant funding from Australian Department for Foreign Affairs and Trade (formerly AusAID) and using innovative cross-disciplinary educational approaches, he has developed international collaborations in health workforce development, and educational and research links with universities and public health institutions in Asia and Africa. This has created an international network of fellow professionals and facilitated the development of skilled individuals who are building institutional capacity in their own countries. Shailendra is a Research Steering Group member and Global Lead - India of the Sydney Infectious Diseases Institute. Shailendra is a member of Sydney Infectious Diseaes Institute (Sydney ID)
