Rubén Pérez-Hidalgo holds a PhD in Hispanic Studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago. His research focuses on the representation of popular subjects from a comparative as well as a transatlantic angle. He’s specially interested in analyzing how radical politics shape and form discourses, and how those are received by wider audiences. More concretely, his research focuses on global populisms and how populist politics are in reality the symptom of a visual and digital popular culture that understands democratic mediation almost exclusively in terms of authentic representation. Furthemore, he is interested in comprehending the entanglements of how the algorithmic production of ideas in (sub)cultures marked as non-political has create at type of populist politics, which in turn can become bulletproof to traditional political dynamics and their corresponding institutionalized protocols.
