BIO

Richard Waterhouse is an Emeritus Professor of History. He was formerly Head of the School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry and Bicentennial Professor of Australian History. In 2002 he was the James B. Frey Distinguished Professor of American Studies at the University of North Carolina, and in 2012 was Visiting Professor, Centre for Nineteenth Century Global Theatre Studies, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.

He is the author of six books and more than 70 chapters and articles on aspects of the social, cultural and political histories of the United States and Australia. He has served as consultant for a number of historical documentaries, including Bombora; a History of Australian Surfing; and The Years That Made Us: Australia Between the Wars.

Richard was the Senior Judge for the NSW Premier's History Awards between 2012 and 2014 and served as a member and chair (2020) of the Non-Fiction and Australian History Panel for the Prime Minister's Literary Awards between 2017 and 2020. He was President of the History Council of NSW between 2012 and 2014 and has served as a member of the Council and Treasurer of the Australian Academy of Humanities from 2012-2023.
