In memoriam
Professor Richard Scolyer AO is widely recognised as one of Australia’s most influential melanoma researchers and a global leader in dermatopathology. His work transformed the diagnosis and pathological understanding of melanoma, shaping clinical practice and improving outcomes for patients both nationally and internationally.
As Co-Medical Director of the Melanoma Institute Australia, Professor Scolyer played a leading role in advancing diagnostic approaches and developing internationally adopted guidelines for melanoma management. With more than 1,000 peer-reviewed publications, he is regarded as a preeminent authority in the field and a driving force behind the pathological classification of melanoma.
Professor Scolyer’s career was marked by exceptional academic and professional achievement. He held medical and research degrees in medicine and pathology, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia, the Royal College of Pathologists (UK), and the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences.
In recognition of his transformational contributions, he was jointly named Australian of the Year in 2024 and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Medicine (honoris causa) by the University of Sydney
