BIO

Associate Professor Rebecca Rockett is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Medical Sciences and an NHMRC Investigator grant recipent (2023-2027). She is a member of the Sydney Infectious Diseases Institute (Sydney ID), and deputy director of the Centre for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology – Public Health at the Westmead campus. Her overall research aim is to improve the detection and treatment of existing and emerging, high burden infectious diseases.

A/Prof Rockett completed a PhD in molecular virology at the University of Queensland in 2015, where she described the pathogenesis of newly discovered human polyomaviruses. With an extensive background in molecular diagnostics she has led the development of genomic and molecular methods to detect a range of infectious diseases, including human Influenza viruses, novel respiratory viruses, malaria and STIs. At SydneyID, her research team uses genomics to understand and contain infectious disease outbreaks, detect antimicrobial resistance and investigate vaccine effectivness.
