RESEARCH INTERESTs

Dr O’Connell’s research focuses on the design, conduct and analysis of clinical trials and observational studies across a range of clinical disciplines, including oncology, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, neonatal medicine and public health. Her work aims to generate high-quality evidence to improve patient outcomes and inform clinical practice, health policy and guideline development.

Her interests include phase II and III clinical trials, individual participant data meta-analyses, large-scale cohort studies, and the application of advanced statistical methods to complex clinical research questions. She has a particular interest in evaluating treatment efficacy and safety, identifying prognostic factors and risk predictors, and translating research findings into clinical practice.

Dr O’Connell has extensive experience in patient-reported outcomes and quality-of-life research, including the development and validation of symptom and quality-of-life measures. She is also interested in statistical methodology and its application to improving the design, analysis and interpretation of clinical research.

Through multidisciplinary collaborations with national and international researchers, clinicians and trial groups, her research contributes to advancing evidence-based healthcare and improving outcomes across diverse patient populations.

Rachel is a member of the Sydney Clinical Trials Centre, a Flagship Centre in the Faculty of Medicine and Health.
