RESEARCH INTERESTs

Dr Petra Karlsson's long term research interests involve finding novel access solutions for people with cerebral palsy and complex communication needs. Communication is a human right but many current access solutions such as pressure sensing micro-switches, autonomic nervous system sensors may not meet the needs for those who do not have voluntary control of their movements.

Dr Petra Karlsson believe that through novel and multidisciplinary approaches, researchers, people with lived experiences, clinicians, engineers and industry partners will stimulate development that leverages available technologies, such as eye-gaze control technology, virtual reality, voice recognition and modern software, to design solutions that hold the key to unlock vast potential in people with severe disabilities, who today have limited means to learn, play and communicate.

Dr Petra Karlsson works on Gadigal country and is passionate about growing and strengthening capacity in cerebral palsy and neurodevelopmental disability research. Dr Karlsson is a non-Indigenous researcher committed to supporting Indigenous-led projects and partnering with people with lived experience in all our research.

Dr Karlsson welcomes enquiries from prospective research students and encourages applications from Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students and those with lived experience of disability.
