BIO

Paul Crosland is a health economist at the University of Sydney, based at the Brain and Mind Centre. He has 15 years of experience in health economics across government and academic roles in Australia and the United Kingdom, with applied research and analysis in economics, public health, simulation modelling and clinical guideline development. Over this time, he has developed a portfolio of applied economic analyses and simulation models that have influenced health policy and informed government decision-making.

Paul's research focuses on youth mental health, mental healthcare system strengthening, and the broader social and economic determinants of mental health. His current research applies dynamic simulation modelling to identify strategic, evidence-based, and cost-effective investments in treatments, services, and policies. He integrates approaches from systems science, health technology assessment, clinical guideline development, and chronic disease prevention to inform decision-making and improve population mental health outcomes.

He is in the final year of PhD candidature examining the economics of addressing systemic drivers of mental health. Findings from his PhD-related research have been published in The Lancet Psychiatry, PharmacoEconomics, and Nature Mental Health, adding to an existing track record of research on chronic disease prevention, alcohol consumption, tobacco use, cardiovascular disease and obesity. Paul is driven by the goal of improving population wellbeing through better use of evidence and economic insights on mental health policy and service planning.
