Olugbenga's broad research theme focuses on drawing the right balance between intellectual property (IP) rights monopolies (patents or trade mark-related) and the public's right of access to products of protected IP rights. On the patents front, he has explored (and will continue to explore), from different perspectives, the relationship between patent monopolies and access to quality and affordable medicines, not only in Low-and-Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) but also in High-Income Countries (HICs). Some of his past works have particularly examined the role of political and economic pressure from HICs, even if subtle, on use of TRIPS flexibilities in LMICs.
