BIO

Associate Professor Nancy Marshall joined the University of Sydney in 2020. She is a City Planner and is now the Program Director for both the Master of Urbanism and Master of Urban and Regional Planning degrees. For the last three years, Nancy has been leading an interdisciplinary group of academics, working with government and industry to design, plan and research smart social spaces, creating new smart street furniture to support social well-being. This research has been funded by the Australian Smart Cities and Suburbs granting body totalling $1.5 million AUD. In her academic career, her research has been funded by national and international granting bodies to $2.23 million AUD. Her recent books include: The Routledge Handbook of People and Place in the 21st Century City (2020) Co-edited with Kate Bishop and Urban Squares as Places Links and Displays (2017) co-authored with Jon Lang.

Nancy’s academic career in Australia started at UNSW where she worked for 18 years, as an academic, an Associate Dean/Education and won its UNSW Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence. She worked as a private planning consultant in Canada specialising in public involvement, facilitation and specialised research, with a focus on qualitative data management and analysis. Nancy’s time in Canada also saw her gain years of experience as a community development facilitator at the local government level to deliver urban parks, and recreation facilities.

Nancy is currently a corporate member of the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) and was extensively involved in the Canadian Institute of Planners. Nancy was a national Senior Editor for the journal Plan Canada 1997-2002. She has been the Chair and member of the Provincial Planning Education and Practice Review Committee for the Alberta Professional Planners Institute, the professional planning accreditation body for CIP. She has also sat as a member of the quasi-judicial Subdivision and Development Appeal Board for the City of Calgary.
