BIO
Dr Mohamed Tashani is a paediatric Advanced Trainee, clinical researcher, and educator with a special interest in infectious diseases, immunisation, and vaccine immunology. He is currently a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney’s Children’s Hospital Westmead Clinical School.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB BCh, Distinction) from the University of Tripoli, Libya (2008), Dr Tashani moved to Australia to pursue postgraduate studies in public health and immunology. He completed a Master of Public Health and Health Management (2011) and a Master of International Public Health (Distinction, 2012) at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), followed by a PhD in Paediatrics and Adolescent Health at the University of Sydney (2017).
His doctoral research, conducted at the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance (NCIRS), focused on optimising immune responses to conjugate vaccines among vulnerable populations — particularly infants and Hajj travellers. Through a series of clinical trials, his work explored how different vaccines interact when given together or sequentially, with implications for improving global immunisation schedules and policy.
Dr Tashani’s contributions to vaccine science earned him several awards, including the International Robert Austrian Research Award in Pneumococcal Vaccinology (2014) and the Fresh Science NSW Award for Young Scientists (2017). His research has been published in high-impact journals such as Vaccine, Journal of Travel Medicine, and Tropical Medicine and Infectious Disease, and cited in World Health Organization (WHO) vaccine position papers.
As an academic, Dr Tashani is passionate about medical education and research supervision. He has supervised PhD and summer scholar students , provided bedside teaching, lectures, and simulation training. He also holds certification in clinical teaching and supervision through the Academy of Clinical Educators (University of Newcastle) and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP).
Beyond academia, Dr Tashani is committed to community health engagement, particularly in promoting vaccination awareness among culturally and linguistically diverse communities. He frequently collaborates with public health organisations and community leaders to deliver education on vaccine-preventable diseases and travel health, especially during the Hajj season.
Dr Tashani is a member of the University of Sydney Institute for Infectious Diseases (Sydney ID) and the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases (ASID). He continues to contribute to peer review and editorial work within vaccine and infectious disease journals.
