With Chief Investigators of the Governing Immersive Project, Postdoctoral Research Associate Milica Stilinovic warned that smart glasses had given “pickup artists a new tool to exploit women”.

“Smart glasses have given pickup artists a new tool to further exploit women,” Dr Milica Stilinovic, a postdoctoral research associate at UoS said. “We call it ‘ambient capture’ because it is a state of play in which men might seem disarming. They will stalk and harass you in places of work, the stairwell of your apartment building, on the street, in the gym, and at the beach – places where you’d assume some sort of right to privacy.

With a cheaper version of Meta's AI glasses selling out at retailers straight away, there are new concerns over privacy and data as more people buy and use smart glasses. As smart glasses fitted with hidden cameras become more popular, privacy concerns have been mounting. Milica speaks to channel 9 on the hidden risks associated with the uptick of wearable tech.

With Kmart releasing a cheaper variant of the popular ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, the team at Governing Immersive Tech has their research and comment feature in The Canberra Times.

Milica Stilinovic warns that "ambient capture" through wearable cameras allows the public to be filmed without consent, essentially handing personal location data to the world. Stilinovic further highlights that lower-cost smart glasses present significant risks regarding questionable data retention practices for consumers.

In an article co-authored with Professor Kimberlee Weatherall, Milica Stilinovic argues that Australia's highly fragmented and out-of-date privacy laws fail to cover individuals covertly filming bystanders using cheap smart glasses. Stilinovic and Weatherall highlight that while apps downloading data must obey privacy laws, the primary legal burden remains misplaced on individuals rather than pushing manufacturers toward stricter "privacy by design" regulations.

Milica warns that the rapid sell-out of Kmart's $89 Anko camera glasses introduces significant public privacy risks due to their ability to record surroundings and track data. Stilinovic describes these devices as "computers for your face" and highlights that weak regulations fail to provide adequate protection for consumers.

Milica spoke to Susan Graham-Ryan on the harms associated with the mass proliferation of smart glasses.

AI glasses are the latest evolution in wearable tech, and thanks in part to celebrity endorsements like Kylie Jenner’s campaign for Meta’s smart glasses, they're taking off. But these devices, dubbed ‘pervert glasses’ by some critics, are raising fresh concerns about privacy and surveillance. Dr Milica Stilinovic, a researcher at University of Sydney’s Governing Immersive Tech project on why they’ve become so popular and the risks that come with them.

Milica joined The Economic Times' Morning Brief podcast to discuss why smart glasses represent a fundamental shift in how we understand privacy, why these harms disproportionately affect women, and why governance needs to catch up before the technology impacts our democratic freedoms.

Milica speaks to ABC's Renee Krosch on the hidden cost of smart glasses adoption.

Milica speaks to the ABC about smart glasses and warn of covert surveillance, and that Australian legislation has not caught up.

In this op-ed for ABC's Religion and Ethics, Milica discusses how violence is not unfamiliar to the human condition, but argues that extremism in the digital age has morphed into something strange which resists our efforts to force it into the familiar categories of ‘ideologically’ and ‘religiously motivated’.

In this episode of ABC Radio National's The Minefield, hosts Waleed Aly and Scott Stephens are joined by Dr Milica Stilinovic to unpack the widening gap between rapid technological advancement and legislation. The discussion uses the rise of AI-integrated smart glasses to explore how tech giants commodify human attention and harvest vast swathes of personal data. Ultimately, the episode interrogates the profound social and moral erosion caused by these devices, warning that immersive wearable tech risks destroying unmediated human connection and fracturing our shared reality.

In this op-ed for ABC's Religion and Ethics, Milica discusses how wearable tech like smart glasses represents a new, intrusive frontier for the commodification and capture of human attention.

Dr Milica Stilinovic has been featured as a key expert voice in an article by the AAP which reported on how video game platforms are being told to show how they are preventing Australian children from being groomed and radicalised.

At the AANZCA25 Conference, Milica presented her work on the Conspiratorial multiverse exploring how the far right have appropriated a form of cultural manoeuvring to embed its own ideological positions within cultural politics.
