Matt Rickard is an academic colorectal surgeon at the University of Sydney Concord Clinical School. He graduated with honours from Sydney University in 1989. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, past Chairman of the Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, past Chair of the Australia and New Zealand Training Board in Colon and Rectal Surgery, and a previous councillor and treasurer of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand. He has a Master’s degree in Clinical Epidemiology from the University of Sydney. During his training he worked in Sydney, Brisbane, Jerusalem, Cape Town and Kenya. He took over the Chair of Colorectal Surgery at Sydney university in 2018.
Matt is a busy colorectal surgeon and has extensive experience in advanced colorectal surgical techniques. His interests are colorectal cancer, laparoscopic colorectal surgery, inflammatory bowel disease and surgical training. His background in epidemiology allows him to properly design and analyse clinical trials, and to practise and teach evidence-based surgery.
Matt was the Chairman of Doctors Assisting in the South Pacific Islands (DAISI) and also works with PANGEA global health education
His personal philosophy of teaching and leadership are based on the three pillars of respect, communication and attention to detail
