BIO
Dr. Petrone is a group leader in the School of Medical Sciences. Her group studies the long-term evolutionary history of RNA viruses using a combination of bioinformatics, protein structure prediction, phylogenetics, and cell culture. The aim of her research is to test evolutionary theories through the discovery and analysis of highly divergent viruses associated with marine invertebrates and single-celled eukaryotes.
She began her research career as a member of Dr. Anthony Fauci’s laboratory at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases before earning her PhD from Yale University where she studied the genomic epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2. At the University of Sydney, Dr. Petrone completed her postdoc under the mentorship of Prof. Edward Holmes.
Dr. Petrone is a member of Sydney Infectious Diseases Institute (Sydney ID).
