Martijn de Sterke received his M Eng. (Applied Physics) degree from the University of Delft (Netherlands) in 1982 and his PhD in Optics from the University of Rochester in 1987. After postdoctoral work at the University of Toronto (1988-1990), he took a faculty position at the University of Sydney, where he is now in Professor in Physics. He won the Pawsey Medal from the Australian Academy of Sciences in 1999, the Esther Hoffman Beller medal from Optics in 2017 and the Beatty Steel medal from the Australian and New Zealand Optica Society in 2024. He was Editor in Chief of Optics Express from 2007-2012.
