BIO

Marius Hoggenmueller is a Lecturer in Design at the School of Architecture, Design and Planning, University of Sydney, and a co-coordinator of the Urban Interfaces Lab. His research investigates how people interact with emerging technologies in situated contexts — from robots in public urban spaces to autonomous vehicles on shared roads. He leads an independent design research program in human-robot and human-agent interaction, advancing understanding through design research, prototyping, and in-the-wild studies.

Marius holds a PhD from the University of Sydney's Design Lab and a BSc/MSc in Media Informatics from the University of Munich. He has authored over 80 publications across premier HCI venues including ACM CHI, DIS, HRI, and ACM TOCHI, and contributes to the HCI community through service roles at national and international conferences including regular Associate Chair for CHI and Paper Chair at OzCHI'2025.

As a design educator, he prepares students to critically engage with digital and emerging technologies — to understand their implications, question their assumptions, and gain hands-on experience in designing meaningful interactions. He coordinates large-scale interface design teaching and has developed research-led curricula that bring human-robot interaction and physical AI into the classroom. As AI in Education Lead for the School, he champions the integration of generative AI into design pedagogy.
