Marco Duranti is a historian of Europe from 1900 to the present specialising in the history of human rights, international law, right-wing movements, and decolonisation. Much of his research has investigated the evolution of European human rights law and the United Nations human rights system. Duranti is currently undertaking an Australian Research Council Discovery Project on the abolition of the corporal punishment of young people as a transntional human rights project in late twentieth-century Australia and Britain.
Duranti has published in the fields of cultural, diplomatic, intellectual, legal, and political history. His publications include Decolonization, Self-Determination, and the Rise of Global Human Rights Politics (Cambridge University Press, 2020), co-edited with Roland Burke and Dirk Moses, a global history of human rights at the end of empire that spans Africa, the Americas, the Middle East, and the Indo-Pacific; and a monograph, The Conservative Human Rights Revolution (Oxford University Press, 2017), which traces the ideological origins of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) drawing on research in twenty archives across six countries.
Duranti received his BA (Honours) from Harvard Univerity and PhD from Yale University. During his postgraduate studies, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and a Fox International Fellowship to conduct research in Britain, France, Germany, and Italy. He has since been a fellow in the Department of History at the European University Institute, the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law and Wolfson College at the University of Cambridge, and the Max Planck Research Group on History and Memory at the University of Konstanz.
