Dr. Mahyar Shirvanimoghaddam is an Associate Professor in the School of Electrical and Information Engineering at The University of Sydney, where he also serves as the Academic Director, Research for the Faculty of Engineering. An internationally recognized expert in telecommunications, he has built an outstanding portfolio within nine years of completing his PhD, focusing primarily on channel coding, short packet communications, and the Internet of Things. His pioneering contributions to the field led to his recognition by the World Economic Forum as one of the top 50 scientists under the age of 40 worldwide in 2018, and he remains among the top 2% of most-cited researchers globally according to Stanford University.

 

Throughout his career, his research has attracted more than $2 million in funding, including three ARC Discovery Projects, an ARC Linkage Project, and an EU Horizon grant. His academic journey began with first-class honors from the University of Tehran and Sharif University of Technology before he earned his PhD from The University of Sydney in 2015. Beyond his technical research, he is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a deeply committed educator. He has been honored with a National Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning from Universities Australia and the Vice-Chancellor's Excellence Award for both teaching and research.

 

His philosophy of "innovation through collaboration" is best exemplified by "The Idea Factory," a multidisciplinary project-based initiative he founded to transform how the Internet of Things is taught to engineering and business students. In addition to his faculty leadership, he remains an active mentor, having supervised numerous PhD and honors students, and was named The University of Sydney's Supervisor of the Year in 2022.
