BIO

Louise's research is primarily focused on the legal regulation of border control and policing. Louise researches the exercise and regulation of coercive legal powers by both state and private actors in low visibility settings including immigration detention and street-based policing. Louise has particular expertise in the interplay between criminal and immigration law systems within Australia. Louise also undertakes research on the embedding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ knowledges and legal perspectives in the curriculum of professional legal education.

 

Louise is committed to teaching compulsory law subjects in part because of their potential to transform student thinking on core legal issues and established an elective to enable students to delve further into the relation between race, racism, and the law.

The Supervising Indigenous Higher Degree Research badge is awarded to learners who have been guided through navigating ethics and protocols, identifying key Indigenous and decolonising theories and methodologies and employing principles of social justice specific to their supervisory practice.
