RESEARCH INTERESTs

Dr Adhikari leads the faba bean breeding program for northern New South Wales and southern Queensland to provide alternative crops to wheat in rotation. He is interested in plant breeding that has a vital role in providing food security to ever increasing human population. Grain legumes have been his main focus to increase their productivity so that they can become profitable crops in the farming system. To pursue these interests he seeks genetic solutions to crop constraints. Therefore, he is involved in developing new breeding methodologies and the inheritance studies of biotic as well as abiotic stresses in crop plants.

Developing alternative grain legumes, such as field pea, grass pea and pigeon pea is also his area of interest to diversify the grain legumes for this region. Currently Dr Adhikari has a number of projects researching on biotic as well as abiotic stresses on crops, especially grain legumes.

Dr Adhikari's research aligns with the Faculty of Science Research Strengths - Understanding Life on Earth, Understanding and Treating Disease in Plants, Food Security, Sustainability, Climate and Environmental Change, Biosecurity, Data and Decisions, Net Zero Technologies, Future Foods.
