BIO

I am a Professor of Neuroscience and my research aims to understand degenerative disorders of the brain.  My goal is to identify the often-complex causes of these disorders and develop new, more effective treatments. It is well known that metals, such as iron, are important for our health but metals, including copper and iron, are also essential for the health of the brain.  I have a particular interest in the role of these metals in degenerative conditions, including Parkinson’s disease, motor neuron disease (ALS), Menkes disease and Wilson’s disease. My group is currently investigating a new metal-based drug treatment for Parkinson’s disease and ALS which we hope will be able to slow or halt the progress of these devastating diseases.  I also have a strong interest in research integrity and ethics and contribute at the national level to these fields.
