ProfessorKate Edwards

Dr Kate Edwards is Professor of Exercise Immunology in the Discipline of Exercise and Sport Sciences, Sydney School of Health Sciences. Prior to joining the University of Sydney as a lecturer in 2011, she was a member of the Behavioural Medicine Research group at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), having moved to the USA after obtaining her PhD in Behavioural Medicine from the University of Birmingham, UK.

Kate's main interests involve the positive effects of exercise on immune function and health; her research involves the acute effects of a single exercise bout, and the chronic effects of exercise training. Kate is a past member of the Board of Directors for the international society Psycho Neuro Immunology Research Society. She has received funding from the World Cancer Research Fund Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Australian Sports Council, Action Medical Research, The Ramaciotti Foundation, the Financial Markets Foundation for Children and Sydney Catalyst. Her active research collaborations span across Australia, UK, Canada, Brazil and the USA, and her research has been featured in articles in the New York Times, Sydney Morning Herald, The Medical Observer, CHOICE, ‘Men's Health' magazine, ‘Women’s Fitness’ magazine, ‘SHAPE’ magazine.

Kate has a strong focus on contributions to teaching and curriculum development, in 2018 she received a Senior Fellowship to the Higher Education Academy and is a mentor and assessor for the Sydney Fellows program for the HEA. Kate is a Course Accreditation Reviewer for ESSA and the elected President for the Council of Head of Exercise, Sport and Movement Sciences (CHESMS). Her excellence in teaching is recognised by multiple teaching awards (including the Vice Chancellors award for Outstanding Teaching, 2017) and teaching focussed grants.
