BIO
Joe Dusseldorp is a Specialist Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon and clinical researcher. He believes the key to advances in surgical management of disease will come from the integration of emerging technologies with modern medical practice. He is focused on developing the skillset and research environment to clinically translate technological advancements into new treatments for his patients.
He has demonstrated capability of developing an idea from concept phase, translating the technological solution into clinical trials, and is well-trained in the pathway to commercialization having completed two rounds of the NSW Government’s Medical Device Commercialisation Training Program (MDCTP).
His main subspecialty area of interest is peripheral nervous system disorders, and during his Fellowship at Harvard University in 2017 he published widely on the state of the art of surgical approaches to the management of neuromotor disorders. He is currently completing his PhD on this topic.
He has experience in commercialization of novel implantable electronics, and a track record of clinically translating novel technological solutions into early phase medical device clinical trials. In 2019 he partnered with Saluda Medical Pty Ltd as the Co-ordinating PI on the Liberty Trial, a first in human clinical trial assessing the use of Closed-Loop Spinal Cord Stimulation as a novel treatment for spasticity. He was a CI on the successful MRFF Stage One Medical Research and Health Frontiers grant submitted by Saluda Medical for that project.
In 2018, he Co-Founded the Sydney Neurobionics Collaboration, bringing attention to the possibility of using implanted electronics to interface with the peripheral nervous system to alleviate the burden of neuromotor disorders in children and adults. He has extensive links with biomedical engineering in numerous universities, adult and paediatric hospitals across multiple sites in Australia and overseas, and with industry.
