RESEARCH INTERESTs

Jose's research interests are related to current and emergent infectious diseases in poultry. Jose's main endeavours are related to the establishment of a surveillance program for Infectious Bronchitis (IB), a very contagious disease produced by an avian Coronavirus. Previous studies conducted by Jose have proven that constant recombination has led to the emergence of IB virus variants that are genetically distant from the vaccine strains. More recent research has proven the poor protection conferred by the current vaccines, with over 20% of vaccinated layer flocks being positive to IBV variants. If challenge studies prove that vaccines do not protect against emergent variants, Jose plans to design a new vaccine against IBV. As a second topic, Jose leads a project about the isolation and characterisation of Enterococcus cecorum, an emergent pathogen affecting the Broiler sector that causes severe lameness and death. Jose also participates in other projects related to Spotty Liver Disease, bacteriophages, point-of-care diagnostics, disinfectants, and coccidia, among others.

Jose's research aligns with the Faculty of Science Research Strengths - Healthy Animals, Food Security.
