BIO
Jonathan completed undergraduate and postgraduate studies at University of Sydney (Medieval History, Early English Literature and Language), and a period of postdoctoral study in Dublin, before appointment to the University of Wales, Lampeter (now University of Wales, Trinity Saint David), where he was Reader in Church History, before he returned to the University of Sydney in 2014 as the Sir Warwick Fairfax Professor of Celtic Studies until he retired in 2021.
His research interests range across history, literature, and archaeology, with a particular focus on monasticism and the cult of saints in the early medieval Ireland and Wales, and a special interest in the cult of St Brendan. He also has made contributions to studies of Irish-Australian history, Celtic mythology, and modern pilgrimage-tourism.
Current projects include a study of the Irish-Australian Mosaics of the Melocco Brothers of Annandale, 1912-58 (with Dr Penny Nash and the late Dr Lynette Olson) and a collaborative field-research project concerning early Irish settlement in Iceland.
