BIO
Dr Jasmine Fardouly is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychology, where she leads a research program investigating positive and negative social media content for users' body image and mental health. She holds a prestigious Sydney Horizon Fellowship on improving social media for users' body image via interventions among individuals, social groups, social media influencers and policy initiatives.
Dr Fardouly was one of the first researchers globally to study how social media use may impact users' body image, mood and eating pathology, and the positive uses of social media for wellbeing. She is interested in sociocultural factors that influence body image and stigma based on physical appearance.
Dr Fardouly was awarded the NSW Young Tall Poppy of the Year by the AIPS in 2024. She was named on Clarivate's Highly Cited Researcher list (Top 0.1% most cited scientists globally) in 2023, 2024, and 2025. She has twice been ranked top Australian researcher in communications by The Australian newspaper.
She completed her PhD at UNSW Sydney on the impact of appearance comparisons through social media on young women's body image. She was a Research Fellow at the Centre for Emotional Health, Macquarie University, before returning to UNSW in 2021. She has recently been a visiting scientist at the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit, University of Cambridge, and at KU Leuven, Belgium.
