Title: Exploring the role of pharmacists in nutrition education
Modifications in lifestyle, including nutrition, forms the basis of first line treatment for many chronic common conditions such as hypertension, hyperlipidaemia and diabetes. Our research has shown that pharmacists are regularly approached by patients with nutrition related enquiries and questions as pharmacists are more widely available than other primary health care providers, in particular in more rural and remote areas of Australia. Yet pharmacists often lack the knowledge and confidence to counsel patients on nutrition. This project explores how pharmacists can better serve the community in providing nutrition counselling within the time constraints of their daily practice.
