BIO
Henry is a Senior Research Associate in the School of Project Management, where he works as a Social-Ecological Systems Modeler under the supervision of Associate Professor Michele Barnes. Henry's research is focused on interdisciplinary, longitudinal social-ecological network research investigating tradeoffs and co-benefits in sustainability processes and interventions in coastal fishing communities along the Kenyan coast. Before joining the University of Sydney, Henry worked as Research Fellow in Social and Economic Risk at the Cairns Institute, James Cook University, within the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program (RRAP), a multi-institutional consortium of partners working together on designing and implementing various small, medium and large scale interventions to sustain critical functions and values for the Great Barrier Reef.
Henry holds a joint European Master degree in System Dynamics and a PhD in Natural and Physical Sciences from James Cook University, Australia. For his master thesis, Henry developed a simulation model to better understand how human development around coral reefs in the Philippines leads to rapid coral reef degradation. After his master degree, Henry worked in Norway as an energy system modeler in DNV GL's Energy Transition Program, the most objective and comprehensive forecast on the future of the global energy system and consequent carbon emissions. Henry's PhD thesis explored the socio-economic resilience of dive tourism on the Great Barrier Reef and other Pacific communities that depend economically on coral reefs. He identified complex and dynamic relationships between adaptive capacity, adaptive responses, and adaption outcomes. His thesis extends and refines existing and emerging climate change adaptation theories. Henry's PhD thesis received the Dean's Award for Research Higher Degree Excellence in 2024.
Besides his work at the University of Sydney, Henry teaches Systems Thinking and System Dynamics courses at the John Gokongwei School of Management at Ateneo de Manila University and he is the founder of DynaMundo, an international advisory company that has the goal to increase the application of systems thinking and analysis outside the academic world.
