BIO
I am a Professor at the Institute for Musculoskeletal Health, Sydney School of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine and Health, The University of Sydney, and the Sydney Local Health District. My reserach focuses on improving care for people with pain and musculoskeletal conditions. I evaluate the benefits and harms of treatments for pain and musculoskeletal conditions. I also lead research to investigate ways to reduce the use of pain medicines, such as opioids, for non-cancer pain.
I have a particular interest in the pharmacological management of back pain. My research has shown that some common medicines are not effective and may cause more harms in people with back pain. These findings have informed changes to clinical guidelines and practice.
I have secured over $35 million in research funding, including a research fellowship from Australia’s National Health and Medical Research Council (Investigator Grant Leadership Level 2). I have published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, including leading journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, BMJ and JAMA. My research has received prestigious recognition, such as awards from the Australian Clinical Trials Alliance (ACTA).
I have supervised 11 PhD students to completion and received awards for supervision from The University of Sydney (2022) and Sydney Research (2023).
I have a professional background in physiotherapy and a PhD from The University of Sydney. I am a Fellow of the Australian College of Physiotherapists and the Royal Society of New South Wales.
