RESEARCH INTERESTs

Carsten investigates mechanisms through which nutrient excess interferes with normal glucose homeostasis. His research has demonstrated causative links between insulin resistance and the intracellular accumulation of lipid intermediates, such as diacylglycerols which activate protein kinase C, and also ceramides.

His studies of mice deficient in protein kinase C isoforms has indicated that these enzymes play multiple roles in the control of glucose and lipid metabolism. More recent translational work has examined their potential as targets for new therapeutic agents to treat the defective glycaemic control seen in obesity and Type 2 diabetes.

Carsten's research aligns with the Faculty of Science Research Strengths - Understanding Life on Earth, Understanding Disease & Disorder in Humans, Preventing and Treating Disease & Disorder, Health and Wellbeing Across the Lifespan.
