BIO
Beatriz is senior lecturer in the Discipline of Sociology and Criminology. Her broad research interest is in social justice, social change and theories of transformation. She has pursued these themes through two research pathways. One, focuses on social exclusion/inclusion issues in contemporary urban China; the other focuses on transformative learning and methodologies.
Her work on China has looked at processes of social inclusion and exclusion of rural migrant workers entering small urban centres, as opposed to those who move to the large metropolises. Her book Small Town China: Rural Labour and Social Exclusion (Routledge 2011) develops that theme through the case study of a county in north China. She has also published work on the impact of social policy on welfare provision in China, including the rapid growth of the philanthropic sector.
Her work on transformative learning arises from her passion in teaching, and her commitment to develop students' pro-social behaviours. Her work in this area combines Theory U - an awareness-based method for changing systems - with transformative education theory, and seeks to identify methods and tools to foster greater self and eco-awareness, alongside the relational capacities needed to develop a transformative learning experience that can lead to positive social change.
