BIO

Associate Professor Waterhouse is the Head of the Cardiovascular Medical Devices Group and a prior Robinson and DECRA Fellow, based at the Charles Perkins Centre in the School of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health. She is an expert in blood-contacting biomaterials and vascular interactions with medical devices.

A/Prof Waterhouse completed a BSc (1st class hons) from the University of Manchester, UK in Cell Biology and was awarded a PhD in bioengineering a coronary stent with immobilised tropoelastin from the University of Sydney with Prof Tony Weiss. She completed her postdoctoral training with Prof Don Ingber at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University, developing anti-thrombotic coatings to prevent medical device blood clots, sepsis therapeutics and anti-biofouling coatings. Her research group focuses on understanding biological interactions at material interfaces for bioinspired medical device engineering. She creates laboratory model systems to study blood clotting and endothelial cell interactions as well as develops anti-thrombotic coatings and evaluates biological interactions of new nanotechnologies. Assoc Prof Waterhouse has received funding from the NHMRC, ARC, Heart Foundation, NSW Health and Ramaciotti Foundation.
