Project Opportunities

Title: The interaction of chronic kidney disease and other chronic disease (including cancer and cardiovascular disease)

Summary of opportunity:

There are a range of opportunities to undertake higher degrees looking at the interaction of chronic diseases, specifically how chronic kidney disease affects other disease epidemiology, and vice versa.

 Opportunity synopsis:

Several projects are being undertaken to investigate incidence, survival, screening, staging and treatment of cancer, cardiovascular disease, mental illness, and other illness in the context of chronic kidney disease. Some projects involve studies within Australia and New Zealand, and others broader global collaboration. Funding is not generally available, but there is opportunity to be involved with research teams and programs of work, through development of your own embedded and related projects.

Project Opportunities

Title: Exploring the landscape of clinical trials

Summary of opportunity:

Clinical trials are essential to determine best medical practice and advance clinical care. Registries of clinical trials, such as the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (ANZCTR), offer an insight to the clinical trials landscape. The ANZCTR, hosted by the NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre, is an online register of clinical trials being undertaken in Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere. It includes trials from the full spectrum of therapeutic areas of pharmaceuticals, surgical procedures, preventive measures, lifestyle, devices, treatment and rehabilitation strategies and complementary therapies. The ANZCTR collects information on trial characteristics such as the conditions studied, the trial design, type of studied interventions, and funding source. This information can be used to explore clinical trial activity to help clinicians, industry, universities and others in the health care sector to fund, plan, and conduct the most promising and needed trials.

Opportunity synopsis:

The aim of this project is "meta-research" (research on research). You will use ANZCTR to explore the clinical trials landscape. This can involve identifying trends and associations between trial characteristics, identifying prioritisation areas, or detailed analysis on the burden of disease correlated with medicare spending and government research investment. The successful candidate can be involved in choosing a focus area of their interest and develop a proposal based on knowledge, experience and skill set.

Project Opportunities

Title: Understanding the risk of recurrence in breast cancer

Summary of opportunity: There are a range of opportunities to undertake higher degrees looking at understanding the risk of recurrence in breast cancer.

Opportunity synopsis: Several projects are being undertaken to investigate risk of recurrence in breast cancer, including current predictors and exploring new biomarkers. Some projects involve real world datasets from Australia and our global collaborators, and others use clinical trial datasets. Our University of Sydney team works closely with our collaborators at the Garvin Institute, the University of New South Wales and Breast Cancer Trials. Funding is not generally available, but there is opportunity to be involved with research teams and programs of work, through development of your own embedded and related projects.

Our multidisciplinary team is based across the School of Public Health and the NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre. I support flexible study plans including students studying part time and remote from campus. I prioritise supervising students who have post graduate methods training (eg MPH, Masters of Epidemiology or Biostatistics). International students are welcome if they have planned support for their fees and living expenses.
