BIO
Dr Aliki Christou is an Honorary Research Fellow at the Sydney School of Public Health with expertise in maternal and perinatal health. Her research focuses on improving perinatal health outcomes especially the prevention of stillbirth through strengthening data and the measurement of perinatal outcomes within health systems to improve quality of care.
Aliki completed her PhD in Public Health in 2019 at the University of Sydney. Her PhD research examined the limitations and potential for improving the availability and quality of data on stillbirth risk factors from national household surveys in low- and middle-income countries. She also investigated parent’s and healthcare provider’s experiences of stillbirth in Afghanistan to understand the contextual factors leading to these deaths and how these factors affect the reporting of stillbirths. Aliki also holds a Master of International Health from Curtin University in Western Australia and a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from the University of Western Australia.
Aliki has experience in program implementation and monitoring and evaluation and from 2011 to 2014 was based in Bangladesh at the icddr,b (International Centre for Diarrhoeal Diseases Research, Bangladesh) working on large-scale programs to improve maternal and neonatal health and survival. She worked at the George Institute for Global Health in Sydney between 2016 and 2019 on several global injury prevention projects in Bangladesh, India and Vietnam. She has also previously worked in Aboriginal health in Western Australia on projects to improve health service delivery
