RESEARCH INTERESTs

A/Prof Montoya's research focuses on developing sustainable chemical and environmental engineering processes that support the transition to net-zero emissions and a circular economy. A/Prof Montoya works on electrochemical technologies and catalytic processes for energy conversion and resource recovery, including hydrogen production, CO₂ conversion, electro-biomass processing to chemicals, and the extraction of critical metals from primary and secondary resources such as e-waste and mineral ores.

A/Prof Montoya's research also includes the valorisation of lignin and waste biomass into high-value chemicals, fuels, and functional materials, as well as gas–solid catalytic pathways relevant to environmental and industrial applications, including ammonia conversion and fertiliser-related processes. Across these areas, A/Prof Montoya integrates operando and in-situ characterisation, electrochemical analysis, reactor and process design, and molecular-scale modelling (including DFT).
