BIO

A/Prof Schindeler heads the Bioengineering & Molecular Medicine laboratory at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research and the Children's Hospital at Westmead. He holds an academic position in the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (USyd Faculty of Engineering).

 

His research focuses on developing treatments for neurofibromatosis (types I and 2) and genetic musculoskeletal disorders such as brittle bone disease (osteogenesis imperfecta) and achondroplasia. His group has expertise in cell culture and preclinical small animal models, molecular biology and CRISPR gene editing, and gene delivery systems including adeno-associated viral vectors (AAVs). He leads a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and health professionals.

 

A/Prof Schindeler has an international reputation in the fields of NF and OI, with over 20 years post-PhD research. He has published >140 peer-review articles and been awarded 46 competitive grants totalling over $10M. He currently leads two NHMRC Ideas grant projects as CIA.
