BIO

Dr Angela Ferguson is a human Immunology researcher who uses a multi-disciplinary approach to explore the immunology of human health and disease.
Dr Ferguson is part of the Centenary Institute Cancer Innovations Centre and the Liver Cancer & Injury Laboratory.
Dr Ferguson is a member of the Charles Perkins Centre and the theme of infection, Immunity and inflammation, School of Medical Sciences at the University of Sydney.
Dr Ferguson’s research addresses a major unmet need aligned with the Charles Perkins Centre mission: understanding the inflammatory mechanisms that drive chronic lifestyle diseases, including cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, liver disease, cancer and diabetes.

Until recently, technological limitations restricted meaningful investigation of spatial biology in tissues. Dr Ferguson is among the leaders establishing and driving these transformative platforms, enabling unprecedented insights into how immune and non-immune cells are spatially organised and functionally interact within diseased tissues.

Dr Ferguson published the first Australian study using imaging mass cytometry, a high-dimensional tissue analysis platform, and has contributed to pioneering work integrating spatial transcriptomics with high-dimensional protein analysis within the same human tissues. These innovations position her at the cutting edge of spatial biology in Australia and internationally.
Dr Ferguson is a passionate educator and supervisor, supporting and mentoring the next generation of scientists. Dr Ferguson is an advocate for women in STEM, and championing diversity in research.
